Plans To Release The NFC Enabled Nokia 6216 Scrapped

Nokia has decided to scrap what could have been its third NFC handset, the Nokia 6216, due to the quality of the consumer experience not being what it hoped for. The Nokia 6216 would have also been the first NFC handset to have handed over control of the payment system to the Service Provider’s SIM card through SWP (Single Wire Protocol). SWP is the exact architecture that China Unicom is expected to be deploying later this year.

Near Field Communications (NFC) is a system that allows a phone handset to be used as a proximity-payment system, waved near a reader for small-value transactions such as public transport for example. Those compliant with the NFC Forum’s specification can operate through induced power (so work on a battery-dead phone) and are compatible with existing ticketing systems such as London’s Oyster card. The short-ranged wireless connectivity technology has evolved from a combination of existing contactless identification and interconnection technologies.

Security has been a major issue since its initial launch though, and the safest way to store the consumers ballance is on the SIM card using SWP. Nokia would much rather see the secure module embedded in the phone, tying the user to the handset rather than the SIM, and when asked about the cancellation of the Nokia 6216, Nokia told NFC World that although it remains sincerely commited to the concept, ”the quality of the consumer experience was not what it needed to be,” in terms of the architecture giving the operators control.

Nokia Announce Q4 2009 Results Exceeding Expectations

Nokia has today announced its Q4 2009 results, reporting an operational profit of EUR 1.141 billion and net sales of EUR 12 billion, down 5% year on year (up 22% sequentially). The devices and services sector saw net sales of EUR 8.2 billion, up 0.5% year on year (18% sequentially), and converged device sales were 20.8 million, increasing the worldwide smartpohone marketshare to 40%. Nokia has also reported estimated industry mobile device volumes of 329 million units, up 8% year on year and 14% sequentially, with 126.9 million Nokia mobile devices, up 12% year on year (17% sequentially).

This is what Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo had to say:

“We grew our market share in smartphones in the fourth quarter, driven by the successful launch of new touch and QWERTY models. Our performance in smartphones, combined with continuing success in the emerging markets, helped us increase sales in our Devices & Services unit, both quarter-on-quarter and year-on-year. Our solid results also owe a good deal to world class supply chain management and impressive sales execution.

I was also pleased with Nokia Siemens Networks’ performance in Q4, especially considering the ongoing challenging conditions in the infrastructure market. That performance enabled it to turn in a full year profit on an operative basis.

Our focus remains firmly on execution, especially around user experience. Here I want to highlight our move to shake up the navigation market with free walk and drive navigation on our smartphones, a good example of how we are leveraging our assets to bring real benefits to consumers.”

Nokia Has Announced The X6 16GB | Available Soon In Four Different Flavours

Nokia has announced a new addition to it’s Xseries line-up. The Nokia X6 now has a 16GB variant that offers all the goodness of the X6 itself minus the Comes with Music service. Although some may see this as ‘nothing new’ remember that 16GB of storage is still quite a lot of space to store your media, and the exclusion of this service will also mean that it will be less strenuous on your back pocket. The Nokia X6 16GB is expected to be available this quarter. More details follow.

The Nokia X6 16GB still has the 3.2″ capacitive wide-touchscreen display and runs Symbian S60 5th Edition. With up to 18 days standby time, 11.5 hours talk time (GSM), 4.5 hours of video playback and a staggering 35 hours of music playback, the X6 16GB comes in four different colors: black, white, white/pink and white/yellow.

Ovi Maps for Mobile will come preloaded on this handset, making it a fully fledged navigation unit too with free voice guided walk and drive navigation, even while offline. A 5 megapixel camera is present with the much loved Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash, along with a video editor and TV-Out support. The Nokia X6 16GB also comes with a couple of free games including Spore by EA, Asphalt 4 and DJ Mix Tour by Gameloft.

Nokia Beta Labs has released an application called Gig Finder. Gig Finder basically recommends concerts and live music events based on your music tastes and location (location relevance currently available for USA, Canada, UK & Ireland). You can even search for events and purchase the tickets directly from your mobile, which I thought was pretty cool. Gig Finder is currently only available for Nokia S60 5th Edition handsets, and you can find details of this application after the break.

Key features:

  • Easy Search. Quickly find where to find the best concerts & other music events near you. Search by artist, genre, city, venue, specific date, date range or a combination of any.
  • Buy Tickets. Direct links connect your mobile to various ticket vendors to conveniently find the best seats & prices.
  • Smart Recommendations. Get recommendations for live events and venues based on your music tastes (profile & on device music library) and location.
  • Get Directions. See where the event is and how to get there with a direct link from Maps. * Start the Buzz. Share information about the gig to Facebook, SMS, or Email.
  • Download Music. Events link directly to the artist pages in Nokia Music Store / Ovi Music (when available in your country) so you can preview or download music before or after seeing your favourite artists live.
  • We will continue to improve and develop the Gig Finder experience in other ways, such as working with our server to make the recommendations ever more relevant to your tastes. Also note that the recommendations will improve and become more focused the more you use Gig Recommender and add favourite artists to your profile. Your feedback is in very welcome to help us make this an app you will want to continue to use to get you closer to the music and artists you love.

Wike alleges withdrawal of security details (The Guardian NG)

The Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike has accused the state Commissioner of Police (CP) of withdrawing policemen attached to him for inexplicable reasons.

The alleged withdrawal of the policemen has added a new twist to the seeming frosty relationship between Wike and the CP, Francis Odesanya.

Wike, while flagging off the reconstruction of the Igbo-Etche Road yesterday, said the seeming deliberate security infraction was been orchestrated to intimidate him ahead of the December 10 re-run national and state legislative supplementary elections.

Wike said the CP for no reason withdrew majority of policemen providing security for him, and perceiving it as part of a plot to ruffle him, the governor called on youths in the state to protect their votes and the mandate of the people, despite the planned deployment of security personnel for “illegal electoral purposes.”

He added: “As I speak with you, the CP has withdrawn the security around me. It is God that will protect me. As governor, the CP has the effrontery to withdraw my security. There is no limit to this kind of intimidation and impunity.”

Wike explained that despite the assault by the CP and the security agencies, nobody in Rivers State would be intimidated by what he term the political antics of the Police.

He said he had intercepted the security manual for the election to be used by the state Police Command, alleging that the command would deploy policemen in manner that APC leaders in the state would have access to disproportionate number of policemen on election day.

He noted that on the average, the Police command would attach at least 15 policemen to one APC leader for the purpose of intimidation and theft of electoral materials, while some of the policemen would also be used by INEC to divert election materials to the home of APC leaders for electoral fraud.

The governor advised the CP not to allow APC leaders to mislead him into committing electoral fraud, warning against indiscriminate arrests being proposed by APC leaders on the premise of frivolous petitions.

Repeated calls to the CP were not answered, but the Command spokesperson, Nnamdi Omoni, said he was not aware of the withdrawal of policemen attached to the governor.

The state Chairman of APC, Davies Ikanya, advised the governor not to create crisis in the state by embarking on flag-off for roads awarded by the federal government through the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), for which work is presently ongoing.

OPEN LETTER TO LINDA IKEJI AT 36: on having an amazing guy, regular sex and a bunch of kids

OPEN LETTER TO LINDA IKEJI AT 36: on having an amazing guy, regular sex and a bunch of kids

Hi, Ms Ikeji! Ah, you know I almost started this letter with ‘dear auntie Linda’ but realised I just turned 29 on September 15. At this stage of my life, I should stop minding titles. But Nigerians love titles sha and I hope you don’t mind me dropping the ‘auntie’ thing. Thank you. And, I know a lecturer at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka who has two PhDs. He doesn’t joke with anyone who does not reflect the PhDs while addressing him. You can imagine.

You are 36! Yeah! That’s beautiful. I mean, you were a model so I wasn’t expecting anything less of what I see – beauty at 36. And money too. Some beauties fade off with too much stress and without adequate maintenance. You look great. Keep controlling what gets to your emotion and I bet you’d be amazing even at 80.

I thought I should use the opportunity of writing you on your birthday to tell you what I admire about you – physically. Your height and your legs – I love them. Oh, yeah. Bae would have to punch me in the head when she reads this but I truly couldn’t hold that back. You know how you couldn’t hold back the ‘amazing guy and regular sex’ wish? Ah. You sef. And you have a cool smile too, with fine dentition.

I watched your birthday-wish video. You are so hilarious and crazy. Kai! And you know how to be in the news sha, whether it is premeditated or not – you should start teaching part-time at the Pan-African University, Lagos. Executives would use your wit and expertise. But ‘regular sex’? Ah. That’s like top priority of that wish-list oh. And your waist, start exercising, something huge is coming your way. I mean, understand that female celebrities unlike the male, rarely get regular sex. They can’t be approached politely for whatever reason.

Linda, I know you want a man who loves and respects you. That should come foremost, following your social status. There are men with amazing penises – I know you like them huge, I see how you mark eggplants and how you giggle each time you share them on your blog – but these are what folks require as teenagers. You are super rich. What you probably need is someone who respects you same way you’d respect him or her, and someone who would not mind your job schedule. Trust me, when I stare at bae and how she is so engrossed in her phone, for pleasure oh, not business, I just wish it wasn’t so. I am like that too. Crazy generation! Your man should understand that he should tolerate you and that you’d support him too even when regular sex is not so regular.

Children are beautiful but do not crave for them because you are fond of them. Seek children because they are lives you’d devote your entire wellbeing into bringing up as responsible humans. I wish the right man finds you now at this ‘critical stage’ but while I wouldn’t want you to be ‘desperate’ for now, you could speak to someone you love – someone who understands you – maybe a fellow celebrity you admire. (I’m sorry that D’Banj is married – but you can have an agreement with Flavour and have a cute, light-complexioned baby. He wouldn’t mind, trust me. He gives it freely. Or maybe he would want you to win in pageantry first. He likes them as ‘beauty queens’.)

It is legal to have a partner (not necessarily bound by marriage) and have a child or two with the fellow, that way, you are not bound. I know that whatever marriage you are going into would have PRE-NUPTIAL as its banner and you know how folks take that around here. You may adopt a couple of children too from around the country – you may not have to do much. Give some cute children a facelift. You can have private individuals who would support you and get an education trust-fund for the child/ren. Trust me; you’d be glad you did.

I am very excited at your decision to diversify in business. It is important in a country like Nigeria where nothing is assured. Your choices of properties; handbags, shoes, cars and houses have shown that you have great taste but you could improve on the economic knowledge. What I mean is, whatever partner you should have and take seriously must understand economics, must understand what it means to have assets and liabilities. He/she must understand that owning 10 iPhone7s and starting a real estate business can be weighed. You guys can build hostels for students across the country and get rents. You could do Linda beer, Linda Radio, etc.

As for going out more, yeah, that fine. Get some air, see real people and note experiences. That’d be amazing. You’d not be remembered for being married and tweeting about it. You have empowered some women to be liberal. You have assisted a couple of people with financial assistance during pressing periods, even though you talk about them in every little misunderstanding you have with folks whose stories give you millions. Anyone who gives help and broadcast it unnecessarily is just serving ego not humanity. When giving gifts, be concerned more about whether it makes you relevant on earth, in the person’s life and whether it gives you subtle peace and not how society rates you.

Children will come. Wealth came. You will grow richer but again, a lot of things rock your boat and I can’t advice you against them – I mean, like getting a keyboard and boasting about you ‘probably’ being the only one who owns it in a country of 180 million people. I get your drift but such things are unnecessary. At 36, what could be important should be leaving a fine mark in the heart of folks. The days of who outshines who could be left for teenagers, seriously.

Ifeoma, you are an amazing soul though with dents. And your dents are like the spots on the cheetah, they make you unique. You can’t be like everyone. Whoever would like you would have to take your not-great-sides too and that’s natural. Stay amazing. Remember that majority of your readers do not earn more than 200k monthly and while they may aspire to be like you, it makes them yearn for shortcuts to meet whatever it is you display. And for the LGBTI community, while sharing their stories, ask for permission. It is hostile out there. One fine hug and not condemnation would be amazing.

(I took a selfie with Linda Ikeji at the 2014 Future Awards, Lagos, Nigeria.)

Hugs. And yes, I’d ask you on a date once I get a job that can pay for a table for two at a fine restaurant somewhere in Lagos.
